Our Granny

Imo Smith, my grandmother was one of the best cooks in Refugio County. She won many blue ribbons with her entries at the Refugio County Fair. I learned so much about cooking style watching her in the kitchen over the years. One of the most important things she taught me was to never skimp on ingredients.

"Use the best and you can't go wrong," she would say.

Imo cooked with great flair whatever harvest we brought in from the fields, the hunt, or our countless Texas Gulf Coast fishing adventures. Granny, as she was lovingly called, always added a Southwestern flavor to her cooking-using fresh salsas, marinades and relishes.

Granny, thank you for your patience with me, teaching me the Golden Rule, and the wonderful memories created around your dinner table
